Lesson Creating- Poem

You want to teach analyzing poems in English?  Here is one with an interesting topic: “racism”

Racism has a human heart….

Racism has a human heart,
An artery of cruelty & death,
It has blood of anger, & evil…,
Has a force of pain & antipathy.

Racism has a human mind….
An Intellect of terror & delusion,
Has an emotion of extreme savage
Imagination of vile ideas, macabre.

Racism has a human mouth,
It has tongue of torture, depravity,
Many teeth of brutal incision & kill
Has a lip of sorrow, hate & death.

You can just print it, give it to your grade 11 students with a list of rhetorical devices and go through it with your class. That is easy, but very boring. Try something easy and interesting by using new media.

Go to Wordle, copy and paste the poem and click go. You can design your wordle (font, layout, color) like this:

You show this creation to your students with a video projector and ask them to write a poem or some verses using these words. Then some students can read out their poems and you discuss them. After reading the original version written by John Nelson you can teach them analyzing the poem. Therefore, they need to refresh their knowledge of  rhetorical devices they have gained in the subject German before.

On Quizlet there is an entertaining facility to practice literary terms: “Drag corresponding items onto each other to make them disappear.” The program counts the time while the students find the right pairs, so they will be excited and will try to improve their performance.

Now you can begin to analyze to poem. Do it orally first, at home your students can formulate an analysis of the poem and reflect their new skills.

I am sure you will have fun while preparing this 90 minutes lesson and your students learn much because it is learning by doing and entertaining. On 100 essential web tools you can discover many other websites to create lessons like that.
